Awakenings in America: and the Jesus People Movement
Both the hand of God and the hand of Satan are seen in the great awakenings in American history.
Awakenings--times when God's Spirit is powerfully poured out and many enter the kingdom of God--come and go unpredictably. Some are large, others small, and all are unique to Christianity.
Does the Jesus People Movement meet the criteria as to what constitutes a genuine moving of the Spirit of God as outlined by Jonathan Edwards, Frank Beardsley, and Iain Murray?
Kent Philpott examines the bright and the dark sides of the awakenings, and he does not spare the Jesus People Movement.
Currently available only in eBook formats for Kindle, Nook, iPad, Adobe, and others.
Are You Really Born Again?
Jesus said, "You must be born again." The most important question anyone could ask you is 'Are You Really Born Again?' You need to know whether you are safely on your
way to heaven or sleeping on the brink of hell.
Many people today think they are Christians, yet do not demonstrate any evidence in their lives that they have ever truly been converted. Too many in evangelical churches make an initial profession
of faith, or even are admitted to church membership, but then fail to manifest any evidence of a real or lasting work of God in their lives.
During his long ministry as pastor of an evangelical church, Kent Philpott acquired wide experience observing people's response to the gospel. In this book he gives principles of great practical help
to all Christians involved in evangelism, pastorally or personally, and also challenges you to examine your own conversion experience.
How Christians Cast Out Demons Today
What can we do when the demonic realm intrudes into a life, causing fear and anguish?
Because of continuing interest in the occult and in angels and demons, especially its sensationalization in film and television, Kent Philpott clearly examines the biblical warrant for Christians' confidence in the name of Jesus to administer healing from the intrusion of demonic beings.
Chapters: 1. Jesus casts out demons; 2. Jesus’ disciples cast out demons; 3. Casting out of demons after the New Testament Era; 4. A theology of the demonic; 5. How people are indwelt by demons; 6. Can Christians have demons? 7. How to cast out demons; 8. Concluding consideration.
Bonus DVD. Video of Kent Philpott and Bob Burns conversation.
Are You Being Duped?
We have been duped, deceived, lied to, tricked, conned, and swindled. This duping goes to the core of our existence - it is by no means trivial.
I take my cue from Jesus. He directly confronted people, and without compromise told them they had been duped. For instance Jesus frequently used the phrase, "Woe to you!" and "woe" was a serious word back then. These statements did not come from anger on Jesus' part, though he did get angry on occasion. Instead, Jesus tried to break down walls, because eternal life or death was at stake.
In several chapters are stories in which Jesus directly and personally opposed error. This book does a little of the same. It will help
you see whether you are blind, deaf, lost and rebellious.
Are you willing to consider whether you, too, have been duped?
For Pastors of Small Churches
Most churches throughout the world are small, with fewer than 200 congregants. Many are smaller than that. Pastors from small churches in dozens of countries have bought this book or were given it by someone in the flock they tend. Many have written to say how helpful the book has been to them for the daily work of their ministry.
In 57 short chapters, Kent Philpott discusses everything from "On Preaching the Gospel" to "Own a Pickup Truck!" He covers the "Pastor's Work Schedule" as well as "Coping with Failure" and "The Worship Service" as well as "The Pastor as Suffering Servant."
Practical and spiritual understanding of the pastor's unique job underlies this heartfelt yet humorous book on the many aspects of the small church pastor's life.
How to Care for Your Pastor
A small church is a unique place. As such, caring for a pastor in a small church can be a distinct challenge.
How can a small congregation minister to their pastor? What should they say or not say? What are the peculiar vulnerabilities of their pastor's position in the church? What kind of things can a congregation do to help bear their pastor's load? What are the problems, pressures and needs of those who pastor the people of God?
Kent Philpott, himself a pastor of a small California church for over twenty-eight years, tackles these questions as he addresses the issue of caring for your pastor. Gleaning from his own experience and weaving together examples from other pastors of small churches, Pastor Philpott offers sage advice and godly wisdom as he explores the unique position, leadership, and financial challenges, plus a host of other difficulties peculiar to small congregations.
Why I Am a Christian
Why am I a Christian? "Given all the barriers and obstacles that stood in my way I am surprised I became a Christian at all. There were so many hindrances that I am amazed afresh that I was ever converted."
From this starting point Kent Philpott deals with the vital and pertinent questions of why and how we become Christians.
Pointing us to the mercy, grace, and divine sovereignty of God through every trial and difficulty on a Christian's road to salvation, he answers such questions as
'Is life just a gamble?'
'Is sin a disease?'
'What is happening in hell?'
In doing so he takes us through the often painful journey of conviction, repentance, and conversion to a saving faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, showing how it was God himself who removed the obstacles and overcame the problems that kept us from Him.
From Death Into Life
Could an Anglican priest not really be a Christian? Written about 1861, the book is the story of the conversion of William Haslam, an Anglican priest in Cornwall, England in the mid 19th century.
Rev. Haslam assumed he was a genuine Christian but was actually 'born again' while preaching the Sunday sermon at his own parish church, at which point a member of the congregation jumped to his feet and shouted out, “The parson is converted! The parson is converted!” It was quite a shock to him as well as his congregation, and it changed his life and ministry forever.
Rev. Haslam remained in the Church of England all of his life, though he had some conflict with his superiors and colleagues over his emphasis on the necessity of true conversion and the danger of
false conversion. In 328 pages of thoroughly delightful accounting, Rev. Haslam describes the following 20 years of his ministry with numbers of short stories and illustrations. Each of the
34 chapters is short and makes for fine daily devotional reading.
Rev. Haslam and his ministry is yet remembered and honored by the people of Cornwall as well as people around the world. This is a book for the ages, not bound by language or culture and may be
enjoyed by all ages of people. While in the public domain, EVP and Miller Avenue Church were blessed to take on the project of typing every word to buying a large print run of the book. We pray that
you will enjoy owning a copy of this book to hold in your hands. May God be glorified and His Kingdom built up!
